CALL FOR ENTRIES
What is the theme for the artwork?
The "Overview Effect" is a shift in perspective, attributed to astronauts "experiencing firsthand the reality of the Earth in space, which is immediately understood to be a tiny, fragile ball of life, "hanging in the void", shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere. From space, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide people become less important, and the need to create a planetary society with the united will to protect this "pale blue dot" becomes both obvious and imperative." (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_effect)
Maybe this type of shift in mindset is possible without leaving the planet, but from other impactful experiences that open our mind and remove boundaries that we believed and imposed. Experiences like recovering from a serious illness, accident, or other loss. Perhaps a profound alignment of priorities as a result of the pandemic or other transformative event in 2020?
We encourage you to to showcase your style. We do not encourage taking our existing labels and doing simple modifications (i.e., photoshop effects). However, understanding our branding elements and using them in a new and unique way aligned to the theme is allowed.
Whom May Enter:
All entrants must be 21 as of August 1, 2021. The contest is only open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, unless restricted by law. Individual entries only, no group entries allowed.
Is there a fee to enter? How do I enter?
Yes, there is a nominal $10 per entry fee. Entrance fees are nonrefundable. An email will be sent out with payment information. All entries must be paid for by the deadline of August 1, 2021. Artist will submit digital images of their artwork, up to 4 per person via the contest entry form (https://form.jotform.com/211445990757162)
What can I win?
Besides bragging rights, Judges Selection: $250 and bottles of labeled wine. People's Choice Award $100.
What type of artwork is allowed? What elements are required?
Take special notice that the label space for art will be 3”x3" or 3"x4". The submitted artwork does not need to be those dimensions, but it will (likely) be reduced to 3”x3” 3"x4" to fit on a 3"Hx4"W or 3"Hx5"W label. Our "Buy Wine" page of our web site has good examples of labels we use and how we would likely utilize your art.
Artist’s signature should not show on artwork nor should the text for the wine type or other standard wine label elements (i.e. alc/vol, Gov't warning). Planning for those elements is allowed but not required and those elements usually take 0.5"-1" of the label. Acknowledgement to artist as the competition winner will be shown on the label, and any required product label information will be added by our designer.
Please Note - the word "art" in label art competition takes priority, so relax on the technical sizing and typical wine product labeling requirements. We will get the art concept onto the winning label that meets state and Fed requirements while keeping in the spirt of the artist's creation.
In general, all submissions should be tasteful, CANNOT depict any children, brands, or copyrights, faces of real people, weaponry, words, flags, military or governmental insignia. and must be the complete intellectual property of the entrant. Note, you may include the words “The Overview Effect” in your design, but not required.
Submissions should be JPG, or JPEG format at 300dpi. The initial digital submission must provide a clear indication of the final artwork. No significant changes may be made to artwork following submission. Any unapproved or significantly altered artwork will be disqualified.
How is winner selected?
The sponsors will select 3-5 finalists from the entries based on: (1) alignment to theme, (2) appropriateness of materials, (3) appropriateness for use as a label, (4) workmanship, (5) overall impression. Should the submitted entries not meet a threshold of quality against the criteria, and/or there is less than 5 entries, the judges may choose not to award any prizes. and all entry fee would be refunded.
A check for the prize money will be sent to the winners within two weeks of the award announcements.
